<p> According to a report by Textile Exchange (formerly Organic Exchange) released today, neither the recession nor unstable economies  put a damper on the fast-growing organic textiles industry which grew 20 percent to an estimated $  5.61 billion in 2010.  </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>According to the results of TE surveys and interviews used to develop the 2010 Global Market Report on Sustainable Textiles, the Top Ten organic cotton-using brands and retailers globally last year were:  H&amp;M (Sweden), C&amp;A (Belgium), Nike, Inc. (Oregon, USA), Inditex (Zara) (Spain), adidas (Germany),  Greensource (Washington, USA), Anvil (New York, USA), Target (Minnesota, USA), Disney Consumer Products (California, USA) and Otto Group (Germany).</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Consumers continue to be committed to supporting the use of organic cotton and other sustainable fibers, while brands and retailers continue to make their product lines more sustainable by continuing to increase their use of such fibers and safer, more innovative manufacturing processes,” said LaRhea Pepper, Textile Exchange managing director. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Several brands and retailers more than doubled their usage of organic cotton alone and plan to do so in 2012 as well. Others with large programs are staying the course.  As a result, Textile Exchange projects the global organic cotton market will increase another 20 percent in 2011 to result in an estimated $  6.2 billion market in 2011 and $  7.4 billion market in 2012.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>2010 was the first year that Textile Exchange requested data regarding industry use of sustainable fibers including recycled and cellulosic fiber.  Two fibers, recycled polyester and Tencel®  were the two leading fibers in terms of quantity reported by responding companies, with all respondents indicating substantial increases in use of those and other sustainable fibers in the upcoming years.  The 2010 results will form the base line for next year’s report. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Key areas identified for collaborative work in the future include developing a harmonized definition of a sustainable or preferred textiles and equipping more players in the textile, apparel, and home furnishings industry to integrate sustainability into their business and product strategies through training, tools, and information.</p>

<p>Textile Exchange will host the 2011 Sustainable Textiles Conference in Barcelona, Spain September 18-20, 2011.  Keynote speakers include David Asquith, David Cook, John Frazier, Patrick Hohmann, and Peter Waeber.  Leaders from throughout the organic and sustainable textiles supply chains around the world are attending including adidas, Anvil Knitwear, C&amp;A, H&amp;M, Nike, Disney Consumer Products, Otto Group, Patagonia and others. <p>Although the image of a loveable little puppy wiggling in a stocking or bedecked in a bow under the tree has become a holiday classic, the reality of where most of these pups come from is far uglier than any holiday shopper would want to acknowledge. </p>

<p>Virtually all puppies sold in pet shops and online come from puppy mills&#8211; factory-like commercial breeding facilities where puppies and their parents are forced to live lonely lives in squalid conditions, with little or no human contact, exercise or medical care. </p>

<p>Although puppy mills are legal in the United States, many breeders&#8211;even those that are USDA-licensed—do not even follow the minimum standards of care for their dogs, confining them in tiny wire cages. Parent dogs are treated as breeding machines and never have the experience of romping on grass, living indoors, playing with toys, enjoying treats or being held by loving people. </p>

<p>Pet experts from Best Friends Animal Society’s warn holiday shoppers about the sickening source of those seemingly sweet pet store puppies, and to encourage anyone in the market for a pet this season to give the precious gift of life to a homeless pet by adopting from a shelter or rescue group. <p>Adopting from a shelter is not at all the same as from buying from a pet store. <p> The producers of the ABC reality series Shark Tank are on a nationwide search to discover America’s most successful entrepreneurs, inventors, and innovators. The show which premiered on ABC in August 2009, features a panel of five wealthy investors called &#8220;Sharks&#8221; who in return for part ownership give budding entrepreneurs injection capital and an unprecedented chance to grow their businesses immediately. One of several entrepreneurs vying for a place on the Shark Tank is Rob Budryk, the inventor of the world’s first retractable portable whiteboard, the ZipBoard. According to Budryk, one particular “Shark” is especially appealing to him as a potential partner: “I think all the ‘Sharks’ are great and would love an opportunity to work with any one of them. If I were to earn a place on the show, I would be ecstatic if Marc Cuban showed interest. I see what he has done in sports and in the business world and feel the partnership would be a perfect fit for our company.”</p>

<p>For contestants who succeed on the Shark Tank, receiving financial backing and exposure to the show’s more than 5.5 million viewers can catapult their business from obscurity to national prominence. One such contestant was Kim Nelson, founder of Daisey Cakes, who saw her $  50,000 start-up business explode to selling over 25,000 cakes in every state after her appearance on the show.  Current Shark Tank hopeful Rob Budryk is looking for much of the same success for his breakthrough product, the ZipBoard coach board. </p>

<p>The Zipboard is a retractable portable coaching board that comes in nine sports-specific styles including basketball, soccer, football, men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s lacrosse, volleyball, field hockey, football and ice hockey. The product, which also comes in a plain whiteboard version, has unlimited applications and can be used as an effective communication tool for the hearing or verbally impaired, as a teacher’s aid to enhance classroom education, or even as a name sign for corporate limousine services.</p>

<p>ZipBoard&#8217;s Rob Budryk talked about his aspirations and his experience during Shark Tank&#8217;s  Friday casting call:  “I’m a big fan of the Shark Tank and when I heard about the open casting call, I immediately planned my trip out to Chicago from Boston to try and get on the show. Our company started selling the ZipBoard earlier this year and while we’ve received early support  from professional sports  franchises and media organizations such as the the Boston Bruins and ESPN, I feel the exposure from the show and potential partnership opportunities with one of the established ‘Sharks’ would propel us to the next level. In the one minute I was given to pitch the ZipBoard to the show’s producers, I put my best foot forward and now we will see.” With 22 new episodes, more than double the number of shows slated for Season 3, the odds for entrepreneurial hopefuls like Rob Budryk are looking bright. The cooperative opened 10 new ShopRite stores and 2 new PriceRite stores during the same period.</p>

<p>In addition to the report of record sales for the year, the company also announced the appointment of Joseph Sheridan to the position of president and COO. Sheridan is a 35-year veteran of the company and has held the position of executive vice president since 1996. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Sheridan replaces Dean Janeway, who remains with Wakefern as president emeritus until his official retirement in January 2012.</p>

<p>“Dean has led Wakefern through a period of unprecedented growth,” stated Joseph S. Colalillo, chairman and CEO of Wakefern Food Corp. “His dedication to seeing Wakefern’s members succeed is at the heart of our success.”</p>

<p>The company also announced that, in honor of Mr. Janeway’s generous spirit and 45 years of service, it has established The Dean Janeway Endowment for Healthcare Excellence at the Foundation of UMDNJ. Mr. Janeway will designate the $  1 million endowment to support groundbreaking research, scholarships for future healthcare professionals or patient care and community service programs for the underserved; all programs offered through the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The endowment fund was presented to Dr. George F. Heinrich, vice chairman and CEO of the Foundation of UMDNJ and its parent company, New Jersey Health Foundation, at Thursday’s meeting. </p>

<p>“We are sincerely grateful that Wakefern has set up an endowment to honor Mr. Janeway,” said Dr. Heinrich. “This Fund will provide him with a meaningful opportunity to advance high quality healthcare programs that mean the most to him and can have a vital impact on the health of residents throughout our state.” </p>

<p>Also at Thursday’s meeting, Wakefern shareholders re-elected to the Board of Directors: Joseph S. Colalillo as chairman;  James Sumas, Larri Wolfson and Irv Glass as vice chairmen; Lawrence Inserra, Jr., treasurer; Richard Saker, Jeffrey Brown and Kenneth Capano as assistant treasurers; Dominick J. Romano as secretary;  Ned Gladstein, Joel Perlmutter and Steven Ravitz, assistant secretaries; Rocco Cingari, Robert Clare, Lawrence Collins, Jon Greenfield, Charles Infusino, Bernard Kenny, Vincent Lo Curcio III, Leonard Sitar, Richard Tully and Richard McMenamin.</p>

<p>Joseph Sheridan, newly appointed president and COO, was also re-elected as an operating officer. </p>
