Affiliated Auctions Set To Auction A Piece Of Art History With Legend Aurea

Affiliated Auctions, North Florida & South Georgia’s Premier auction house, will hold a three day auction event on December 2nd-4th, 2011, which will feature Legend Aurea, one part of Tinteretto’s True Cross Christi.
Famous Venetian Renaissance artist Tintoretto painted Legend of the True Cross Christi, a narrative which originally spanned ten canvases, in the 16th century. Affiliated Auctions of Tallahassee will be auctioning Legend Aurea, one canvas panel from The True Cross Christi series, on December 4th. Originally the ten canvases would have been displayed in a convent church in Venice. The larger scene was most likely dismantled by Napoleon’s forces during the emperor’s campaign to suppress religious institutions in France. This particular section of canvas can trace its provenance back to 1855 when it was privately purchased in Venice. Legend Aurea features a flag bearing warrior in the center foreground and, particularly of note, a portrait of Tintoretto’s teacher Titian to the right of the central figure. The canvas measures 234 by 141 centimeters. Included in the sale will be full documentation on Legend Aurea’s provenance and an expert certified appraisal by Prof. Dr. Lino Moretti.
The Tintoretto will be included in a three day auction event. In addition to the Fine Antique and Collectibles Auction, Affiliated Auctions will put on a Friday Night Discovery sale on the 2nd and a Military Auction on the 3rd.
